Why does the oil pressure gauge light up red?

Oct 11, 2024

1. Reasons related to lubricating oil:

(1) Insufficient lubricating oil in the oil pan, inappropriate lubricating oil grade or too low viscosity;

(2) Poor anti-foaming performance of lubricating oil, causing a large amount of air to mix into the oil circuit;

(3) The oil pump diaphragm ruptures and gasoline leaks into the oil pan, diluting the lubricating oil;

(4) Due to damage to the cylinder gasket or cracks in the bushing, cooling water leaks into the oil pan, diluting the lubricating oil.

2. Mechanical factors:

(1) Improper adjustment of the oil pressure limiting valve, the spring is too soft or broken, and the return oil valve leaks;

(2) The lubricating oil filter gasket is damaged, the bypass valve is not sealed, the spring is broken or the pressure is insufficient;

(3) The lubricating oil inlet pipe joint is loose or the oil pipe is broken;

(4) The end face clearance of the oil pump is too large, the gear meshing clearance is too large or the shaft and bearing clearance is too large, resulting in low oil pressure and poor oil pumping;

(5) The sealing surfaces, valves and pipe joints are not sealed tightly, or the lubricating oil channel oil pipe leaks seriously or leaks due to rupture;

(6) The oil filter is cracked or seriously blocked, and due to untimely cleaning and poor lubricating oil cleanliness, large sludge deposition occurs, resulting in serious blockage of the filter;

(7) The wear clearance of the crankshaft main bearing, connecting rod bearing or camshaft bearing is too large;

(8) The oil pressure gauge or oil sensor (sensor) is not working properly or is damaged. In short, any of the above reasons may cause the oil pressure at the lubrication system pressure measuring point to be too low and cause the "red light" phenomenon. If the vehicle is in good condition and the red light phenomenon occurs just after the lubricant has been replaced, it is usually related to improper selection of lubricant viscosity grade.

The prerequisite for solving the "red light" problem is to find out where the lubrication system failure occurs, and it is necessary to target different failures and prescribe the right medicine.

The key to solving the "red light" issue is identifying the exact cause of the failure in the lubrication system. It's important to pinpoint whether the problem is related to the type of motor oil for cars used or a mechanical fault, and take corrective action based on the specific failure.
